Afton at Bluebird Gap

It's not often DH is jealous of a beard

So much excitement packed into an hour at the petting zoo.

Small one stole the show. Every turn brought the discovery of strange creatures: goats, pigs, chickens. Animals DH and I barely notice. The price of familiarity.

Watching her joy was our joy.

Enjoy your weekend!

Pretty Bird

Monday afternoon... Afton's asleep; Gwenny is finishing lunch. Time for me to start writing, brainstorming for the week ahead.

Thing is I read recited children's board books to Gwenny for 6 or so hours a day all of last week. I just hope I didn't permanently damage my ability to think of words with more than one syllable.

So, my silly wasted weekend. I meant to clean out and tune up the Brother then sew a cover for it. Inconsiderate of all its hard work, I do not have a cover for my sewing machine. Bad seamstress, bad!

Instead, I let my mind wander at the pet store. Hmm... It might be fun to own a bird. The girls love watching the fish. I bet they would like watching a bird, too. I think I've mentioned before that I have a problem with amassing animals.

Tim gave me the go ahead to look for a bird. So that's just what I did... all day, toting the girls from one pet store to the next, watching finches, budgies, cockatiels and lovebirds. I priced cages, supplies and birds in 6 pet shops. What did I come home with?

A bird feeder

Not really. I came home with nothing. I just filled up the existing bird feeders.

My conclusion - I'd love to have a pair of budgies or lovebirds if someone wants to give us a large, round cage. Otherwise, I'd rather spend that money on rosewood knitting needles and fabric.

How did we even end up at the pet store? That's a fair question. This all started when a friend offered Tim their leopard gecko. Ironically, the gecko died the morning of moving day. So no gecko. However, Tim worked so hard to convince me to own a reptile (I think he was excited about feeding worms to something) that he wanted to replace the gecko we didn't own yet. That's how we went from no new pets Thursday to shopping for a gecko and 2 birds Saturday.

The gecko has yet to be replaced, so no new pets, just thoughts. I'm sure if we end up with something new, I'll post pictures. Good thing no one offered us a chicken. We could have ended up shopping for a farm.

Hootie the Hottie

As promised...

Afton's Owl Heater - "Hootie"

I realize that description wants an explanation. Hootie is actually a pouch that holds a rice bag as seen below:

A little history... Sarah (my super talented youngest sister, not to be confused with my super talented middle sister) made rice-filled heat packs for her friends this year, including me. Within days of receiving mine, Afton claimed it as her own. If her feet are anything less than toasty warm, Baby A screams as though frost bite were imminent. When we were staying at my parents over Christmas, the only way she slept was cuddled next to my Christmas present hot rice pack.

All that to say, I wanted my rice pack back. Sarah made it for me for a reason. My back is killing me from hauling babies around all day. So, I proposed a trade to Afton. A custom-made, super cute rice pack for her if she'd relinquish mine.

Afton's pack had a few challenges:
Velcro at the base holds the rice pack in place
and provides easy access for heating

1. She urps on everything. I need to be able to wash it. Rice doesn't hold up well in the washer, so her pack needed a cover.
2. Fabric takes up the smells in the microwave. If the rice pack is removable, the fabric next to Afton might not pick up the smell of reheated leftovers. At least, that's the idea.
3. This would probably become her "must-have" to sleep with. In the future, it would be nice if it were cute. When she no longer needs the rice, I'll stuff it and close up the bottom.

Why the owl? I'm on an owl kick. I don't know. That's probably why I can't come up with a cuter name than "Hootie." He really doesn't mesh with the rice pack/heater theme. Oh well.

The next step: mass production because I know you all want one for the cold-natured babies in your life. :)
